P7 Investigative Maths!

2nd Oct 2025
P7 got out an about today during their outdoor maths lesson! 🌳
We’ve been learning all about the Victorians, and today we went to collect data which would help us to calculate the average life expectancy of a Victorian person, and then compare that to a person living in the modern day!
We headed to a local graveyard where we searched the headstones and had to select information based on criteria:
- the person had to have been born and then died between 1837 and 1901.

We used calculators to subtract the year of birth from the year of death, which helped us work out what age the person was when they died. After we found 10 Victorians, we completed the process again for people who were born and had died after the Victorian era.

Once back at school, we used our knowledge of ‘the mean’ to calculate the average life span! Did you know that it was approximately 30 years old for a Victorian?! Mrs Nelson would have been pushing her luck if she was a Victorian woman! 😆

We then applied our knowledge of our topic to draw some conclusions from our data and give some potential reasons as to why Victorians lived shorter lives! For example:
- more deaths were children because of the dangerous jobs they had to do,
- people experienced the Potato Famine,
- they didn’t have the same healthcare.

P7 were extremely impressive in their handling and analysis of data! Well done everyone 🎉📚
